Women entrepreneurs mean business at The Bridges

If you’re a woman with a dream of owning her own business, you’ll find all the inspiration you need at The Bridges at 57th Street. Here, the majority of creative, successful businesses are owned by local women who are making a serious impact on the Sioux Falls shopping scene and beyond. To date, sixteen Bridges locations are owned or co-owned by women.

Many of these women got their start at The Bridges and have since grown their businesses to include additional locations, expanded product lines, more square footage, unique community events or all of the above. While they all took different paths to entrepreneurship, they share similar stories about “taking the big leap” into starting a business.

Want some examples?

Take Melissa Johnson, owner of Oh My Cupcakes! Melissa refers to herself as an “accidental business owner,” who started a small cupcake business with a little money and a lot of love. Today, her shop is one of Sioux Falls’ most popular food destinations and she has a Facebook following of nearly 20,000 people.

Jody Kusek, owner of Forget Me Not and Eddy Joy Baby Boutique, launched one of the first stores at The Bridges in 2008 and just recently expanded into a newly renovated 7,000 square foot space that houses both of her locations across the lower level of one of the Bridges buildings.

Sheryl Nelson was a stay-at-home mom and substitute teacher who started working at Kidtopia Toy Store at The Bridges. She bought the stores six months later.  Sheryl recently renovated her Bridges location, which has a strong following of loyal customers. She also opened a second location at Dawley Farms.

Tamara Dettler began her entrepreneurial path as a custom framer, but her store, You’ve Been Framed, has morphed and expanded over the years into a unique collection of clothing, jewelry, home décor and baby apparel—in addition to custom framing. Today, You’ve Been Framed carries Alex and Ani as well as Pandora, among other popular product lines. Tamara and her husband Dave recently took a leap in a new direction by opening the first Moe’s Home Collection franchise in the United States, which is located at Lake Lorraine.

The stories of growth and success go on and on at The Bridges at 57th Street, thanks to the passionate and determined local owners who pour their hearts into their businesses. Along the way, many of them have also poured their hearts into the community.

“I think most of the stores here believe in giving back,” explains Sheryl Nelson, owner of Kidtopia Toy Store. “For example, Kidtopia donates birthday gifts to every child at Children’s Home Society each year. We feel it’s important for these kids to get something special on their birthday. We’re happy to do it.”

Hello Spring!

Spring is here and that means fresh new things at The Bridges, from colorful wardrobes to lighter menus to a fresh re-branded website! We are very excited to launch our new user-friendly website, which includes our new updated logo and some fun new features—like this blog, for instance! We hope you like it and would love to hear your feedback. Check in every month for a timely topic, updated Bridges news and some of our favorite finds.

Spring is also the beginning of special celebrations, like Mother’s Day, graduations, weddings and showers. The best gifts always come from The Bridges, thanks to locally owned boutiques that go out of their way to find unique items that you can’t get just anywhere. If you’re looking for ideas, consider custom framing, custom jewelry, customized skin and hair care, a personalized shopping experience, custom decorating, custom cupcakes or donuts...the key word here is “custom” because The Bridges really does cater to an individual experience.

Finally, a little news. J.Ella Boutique has moved into a new location at The Bridges and is loving the brighter, more visible storefront in our south building. Our friends at Bridges Chiropractic are expanding into the old J.Ella Boutique location, providing Dr. Schroeder and his staff with double the space and a better client experience. We are sad to say good-bye to Cleaver’s Market as they move away from their popular brick-and-mortar location on the corner to specialize in Cleaver’s Catering. We wish them the best of luck! We have several new tenants getting ready to sign on the dotted line and we are super excited to welcome them…you’ll hear all about it in next month’s blog.

Have an amazing spring and don’t forget to like our Facebook page for all the latest updates and your chance to win during any of our many fun promotions!
